Giving regular chores to your children will help to teach them caring, responsibility and respect for others and their belongings.   Take into account the child's age, maturity and physical ability when choosing a chore for them and make sure that you do the chore with the child the first few times until they get the hang of it.   Here are a few ideas for the different age groups:

2-3 YEAR OLDS

Make a sticker chart for this age group with one or two chores and be regular each day at doing the chore with your toddler and making it a fun event.   Rewarding them with a sticker is exciting and a great visual reminder which they will love.   Although, at this age, the chore will only be completed with your help, you are setting a very good example for your toddlers of positive habits, kindness and  helping others as they grow.

  • Help make the bed.
  • Pick up toys and books.
  • Put laundry in the hamper or to the laundry room.
  • Help feed pets. Hand them the kibble to put in the bowl.
  • Help wipe up messes.
  • Dust with socks on their hands.
  • Mop in areas with help.  Buy a tiny broom and let them imitate you.

4-5 YEAR OLDS

At this age, Pre K and Kindergarten children usually are still motivated to help as they love individual time with adults.   Helping them to master their chores in the beginning is fine but they will soon get the hang of it so they must be given freedom to do their chores alone.   Things may not get done perfectly, and a plate or two may be broken but it's all part of the learning curve.

  • Clear and set the table.
  • Dust.
  • Help out in cooking and preparing food. Perhaps making a salad every night if you put out the right ingredients is a good way to start.
  • Carrying and putting away groceries. Let them carry the lighter parcels from the car into the house.
  • Teach them to sort dark laundry from light laundry into two piles.
  • Let them put the dried clothes on each person's bed ready to be put away.
  • Making their beds with a little help is always a good idea at this age.

Remember, it's not about the quality of the final product but the good habits that will be formed.   Letting children learn that certain responsibilities are expected of them is vital for the growth, eventually into a well rounded adult.
